Infertility and Stress
We have all heard it from our friends and loved ones, “Just stop trying and it will happen.” Unfortunately, for many of us, our fertility is out of our control. Stress can play a huge role in infertility and for those of us that are enduring fertility treatments, it is very hard to not be stressed at some point during the process. Some research has shown that the stress levels of women facing fertility treatments are similar to patients that face cancer and other serious illnesses. When going through treatment, it is important to keep control of what you can, and most importantly, your happiness and health. It is imperative to remember that babies want a happy and healthy mom – and that begins before conception.
Although we may not be able to completely eliminate stress, there are a few things that you can do to help reduce stress while coping with the physical and emotional pain that infertility brings.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat infertility in hopes of creating a balance of energy flow – the qi and chi. It is shown that acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to create a thick, rich uterine lining. Many find that acupuncture is relaxing and calming. Some acupuncture clinics will offer herbal remedies for various reproductive issues.
Yoga: Yoga really allows for the patient to focus on themself, which is essential in the fertility process. It allows one to focus on non-strenuous movements and breathing while relieving stress. It is believed that yoga can help to balance out the body’s systems. Yoga is a great way to take care of your body through peace and relaxation. Some women find that they enjoy incorporating yoga and meditation to find inner strength.
Diet: YOU are the most important person in this process and taking care of yourself is essential for successful fertility treatments. Be conscious of the foods that you are eating and make sure that your choices are healthful and nourishing. Consuming the right kind of calories and nutrients will also make you feel better about the way you look and feel.
Travel/Hobbies: Who doesn’t enjoy visiting beautiful places – both near and far? Whether it is a short day trip or a week away, take the time to soak in the beautiful world around you. Find time to do the things that you enjoy and make you happy.
Support Groups: Many women and couples find that others simply “don’t understand” what they are going through. It can be very helpful to connect with others that are going through or have gone through infertility. A number of fertility clinics will be able to offer contacts for emotional support or fertility counseling. Many are turning to the internet to seek support through the use of fertility forums and websites. Simply talking and sharing stories will you allow to get through this stressful time.
